How To Become A Music Critic

Hello everyone, my name is James Kaloko and today, I will be giving my speech on how to become a music critic.

Anyone in this world can give an opinion on something, even a baby can give an opinion. Like if a baby do not like something, it will cry or if they do like something, it will giggle, smile, laugh, and do cute things. But being a music critic is much different than that and have many different steps. But I only have 3 main points on how to successfully become a music critic and that is how to understand music, how to properly critique music, and how to build your reputation as a music critic.

Music in general is not that hard to understand. You basically just listen to a song, find what's going on in it and give your opinion.

But as a music critic, you have to properly discuss the instrumentation/production, the vocal performance, and the lyrics. For the instrumentation/Production, you have to discuss how each instrument like the drums or melody sounds like and hear if it flows and match well with the lyrics and vocal performance. For the vocal performance, you have to hear if the artist actually sounds good, convey some type of emotion, or hear if they flow well with the instrumentation/production. For the lyrics, you have to know what the song is actually about or understand what the artist is trying to say and what message it's trying to bring out. This method will help, so that you know what you're talking about and not giving any false information. Another method to understand music is that you have to listen and get familiar with every genre of music. This will help you understand more genres of music and have varieties to talk about. So understanding music is not just listening to music, you need to take notes on how a song is and then give your opinion on it.

So now that you know how to understand music, I will now discuss how to actually critique music.

Like I said earlier, you have to understand how each song is like and how it makes you feel while listening to it. Sometimes it takes multiple repeated listens for music critics to actually critique a song, so that their opinions are valid and they feel comfortable sharing it. But there are other times when a certain song they first like worn off on them or dislike now. The same thing goes for songs they originally disliked, but now like again for a certain reason. So that's why giving each songs repeated listens will help you properly critique it. Another way is to give a song some type rating. So after you get giving your points on how a certain song is good or bad, you have to give it a rating to let your audience know how you overall feel about it. If say a song is terrible or bad, you will give it a 0/5 or 1/5. If you say a song is Meh/Mediocre, you will give it a 2/5. Decent will be a 3/5, Good will be 4/5, and Great will be 5/5. Some critics do not usually give ratings and that's fine if you don't want to use them, but it is useful to give your overall thoughts on it. So those are the points on how to actually critique music.

The last set of information I have for you guys on how to actually become a music critic is to build your reputation. Let's say your a music blogger or have a YouTube channel and you want everyone to check out what you post, first thing you need is a social media. Social Media is important, so that you can share your review you made and let people check it out. Another way to build your reputation is to make friends with other music reviewers, so that you can get their perspective on how to review music and maybe, work with them in a future review. The last step on how to build your reputation as a music critic is to just be yourself. If you be yourself, not only will people accept you, but they will respect you and what you have to say. Also they might share your content with other people for just being yourself and being the best music critic that you can.

So today, I discussed with you guys how to understand music. I discussed how to properly critique music and I discussed how to build your reputation as a music critic. Being a music critic is not that hard to do, but it takes knowledge and understanding to properly do it. So if you are trying to become a music critic, I hope this information helped you and just have fun becoming a music critic because it's great!

But before I leave, I got some music critics and podcasts for you guys to check out if you are interested on learning how it feels like becoming a music critic. Check out music critics like Spectrum Pulse, DeadEndHipHop, The Double Agent, ACriticNamedKevin, LokoReviews aka myself, and plenty more awesome reviewers. Also check out podcasts like NMR, The Most Irrelevant Podcast On The Internet, Chart Talkers, B-Side Podcast, and plenty more.

So thank you all for tuning into my speech and have a good day.
