Hey guys, LokoReviews here and I just got done watching Split and here is my full blog review of it.
Now Split is a new horror movie produced by Blumhouse and M. Night Shyamalan, who also produced, written, and directed the film. The film is basically about this man who have these personality disorder and one of his many personalities kidnap these 3 teenage girls and keep them as hostages to prepare them for something truly evil.
Now when I saw the trailer for this film, I was really intrigued. The concept looked interesting and it could be a fun and thrilling film to watch. Also this film got a cast full of people that made films I liked from every actor/actress in it.
This film also stars Anya Taylor-Joy who was in the excellent and pretty overlooked horror film The Witch. Also she was the main character in last year film Morgan, which was a decent film.
This film also got supporting roles from Betty Buckley who was in the classic Carrie film from 1976. Haley Lu Richardson who was in my favorite film from last year The Edge Of Seventeen. And Jessica Sula who was in the film Honeytrap and the British TV show Skins.
So knowing that the film was going to have a talented cast and a intriguing premise, I was definitely on board until I found out it was produced by both Blumhouse productions and M. Night Shyamalan, who also written and directed the film. Now I have nothing against either Blumhouse or M. Night Shyamalan and they made films I did like from, especially their collaboration on the 2015 horror film The Visit. But they made films that weren't good and are kinda known for making shit films. So knowing that Blumhouse and M. Night were producing this film, I was kinda worried that it wasn't going to be good.
BUT after seeing it, Split is actually a pretty decent film and one of the most different films I ever seen from both Blumhouse and M. Night himself. Now I'm not going to say that this is a groundbreaking movie, because it does have a few issues. But I did find enjoyment watching it and there were good parts in it that I'm going to discuss and not spoiler anything at all.
The best part and character of this film is James Mcavoy who play these different characters from a guy who has Personality Disorder. I got to say, he definitely blew me away with his performance. He was creepy, he was funny, and I truly believed that all these characters that he playing in this film are truly different people inside this 1 human being. James Mcavoy definitely did an amazing job with his performance and I can't wait to see him in more films.
Anya Taylor-Joy was also good in the film and the back story of the character she played was truly haunting which made me feel sorry for her.
Another thing I liked in this film is the way it was shot. Every shot in this film is great to look at and it also has this claustrophobic vibe that helped make this film even more creepier and unsettling.
The last positive thing I have to say is that the film sometimes know how to flow both Horror and Comedy in without being too forced or out of place. And the film kinda succeeded with that.
Now even though, there were some parts in this film I did like and appreciate, there were other parts I wasn't really feeling.
The first thing I wasn't feeling were the supporting actresses. Now don't get me wrong, they weren't bad in the film and they tried their best on here. But they didn't really contributed a whole lot. Betty Buckley's character did contribute a little by trying to get answers from James Mcavoy's character, but they gave out too much exposition and it made the movie feel really slow. As for the teenage girls that isn't Anya Taylor-Joy, they tried their best but they weren't that interesting as characters and I didn't really care too much about them in the film.
Another negative I have is that there were a lot of slow and awkward scenes. I already mentioned that some of the scenes with Betty Buckley did drag on for too long and didn't really need all that exposition. Also I already that this film does try to add comedy here and there and even though some of them did work, most of them felt really awkward and I didn't find it funny.
The last problem I have with this movie and this is the main one and that is the ending of the film. Now don't get me wrong, it's not a bad ending and there were some parts of it I did like and appreciated. But the way it ended felt like it was building to something amazing and it was 75% there. But the other 25% was just a eye squinting and kinda face palm moment.
But overall, I really did enjoy Split despite the problems I have with it. It is definitely one of the most interesting and strangest films I saw so far this year and I recommend that you guys watch it. Also I have to give major props to both Blumhouse and M. Night Shyamalan for making something different and they definitely did a solid job. Overall, Split is a decent film and I'm definitely going to watch it again to see if it will grow on me even more.
