Hey guys, LokoReviews here and today, I got a movie review for the recent horror movie from Blumhouse called Viral.
Here's the trailer:
Now Viral is about this outbreak of a virus that wipes out the majority of the human population and we follow this young lady named Emma played by Sofia Black D'Elia as she documents her family's new life in quarantine & tries to protect her sister that sadly gets infected.
Now for the people who didn't know or haven't followed me on Twitter (Here's my Twitter: @LokoReviews), lately I've been obsessed with watching all of Blumhouse horror movies,
I know a lot of their horror movies are not that good and doesn't really hold up, but they do occasionally make pretty solid films and I try to give them a benefit of a doubt. So when I heard that Blumhouse was making a movie called Viral, I was pretty interested and the the trailers definitely impressed me.
So after I got done seeing it, how does this movie hold up?
Well,,, It's actually a pretty decent film.
I thought the performances from most of the actors and actresses were solid like the lead actress Sofia Black D'Elia who plays Emma was really good.
Analeigh Tipton who played Stacey was also good and shared a really good bond and connection with her sister Emma.
And Travis Tope who plays the love interset to Sofia's character did a solid job and also shared a nice bond & connection with Emma.
I also cared for some of the characters like Emma who started off shy and awkward at the beginning, but later on held her own by being sweet, caring, and definitely protective over the ones she loves. Another character I cared for was Stacey. At first, I wasn't really feeling her character because I thought she was just your typical teenage girl who only cared about boys and partying. But when she got infected, she was more mature, caring for her sister, and I felt sorry for her & I wanted her to be safe. The last character I cared about in this film was Evan and even though we don't get to know that much of his personality, he was supportive and I definitely cared about his relationship with him & Emma.
The last thing I liked about this movie is that there was some legitimate tense and scary moments in this film. And there were a bunch of solid drama filled moments that I wasn't expecting at all.
But even with all the positive things I said about this film, there were a lot of problems in it that I felt brung this movie down from being great.
First off, the premise of this movie has been done to death & even though I didn't mind it, there are other films that did this premise way better. Speaking of the premise, I didn't really buy that parasites could turn people into infected zombies. I know that parasites can get inside people and make them feel sick and weak, but I doubt they can turn people into real life Zombies.
Another thing I didn't like and care for was some of the characters.
Like Micahel Kelly who plays the father of both Sofia and Analeigh's characters wasn't bad & he did contribute a little. But I didn't really feel a connection with his character and he barely got a chance to shine.
Another character I didn't care for was this anonymous guy. I mean this guy was sort of interesting on how he thinks the government caused this whole outbreak, but he was barely in the movie and we didn't get to hear or see from him again. And we didn't get to know who this person was, so what was the point of adding him when he contributes to absolutely nothing? Blumhouse, you guys better explain!???
But the last character I didn't care for or liked at all was Machine Gun Kelly's character. Now Machine Gun Kelly is a decent rapper in my opinion who made some good songs and he seems like a cool guy in real life, but his character in this movie was just so Douchy, generic, and pointless that I wanted him dead when he first showed up. And thank goodness he was killed off because I didn't like or cared for him at all.
This photo is hilarious! :D
Now the last problem I have with this film was that it has a bunch of typical stuff you see in any horror movie especially with Blumhouse. A family that lives in the suburbs and has to deal with a terrifying situation, that's definitely basic Blumhouse stuff. Generic characters, that's in a lot of horror movies. Cheap and false jump scares, oh..... That's definitely in a shit loads of horror movies. And lastly, characters that do dumb decisions.
But even with all that negativity, this was still a decent movie. It's not a movie that everyone will like because it does have a lot of problems. But if you're a horror movie fan and want something to watch, definitely check this movie out. And I have to give this film a 7/10.
Well, that's it for the review. Tell me what do you think and I hope you guys enjoyed, Thank you for tuning in and I'll see you guys later. So this is James Kaloko and everyone in this world just stay loco, peace!
